ACTIONS RATHER THAN PROMISES

At Six Senses Crans-Montana, commitment to sustainable development is tangibly expressed in its support of meaningful initiatives.

Six Senses properties finance environmental and social projects in their own regions by donating part of their income to a fund dedicated to these initiatives. In Crans-Montana, the resort allocates 0.5% of its annual turnover to this fund. The actions supported are numerous and varied. They include the training of volunteers to ensure the protection of flocks as part of a cohabitation project with wolves, and the creation of a fruit tree seed bank.

Charlotte la Marmotte mascot

At Six Senses Crans-Montana, a special guest awaits you in your room: Charlotte the Marmot! Much more than a cute plushie, she is the resort’s mascot. Handmade in Italy by Stefania and her grandmother Lina, she personifies the resort’s commitment to sustainable development. Her tale is closely linked to that of Stefania, her creator. In October 2018, a violent storm devastated the pine forest of Le Trentin where she grew up, destroying close on 4 million cubic meters of trees. To give back to nature what it gave her, Stefania donates 10% of the profits on sales of Charlotte la Marmotte to a reforestation project, the Trentino Tree Agreement. By adopting her, you will be doing much more than leaving with a unique souvenir. You will be joining her creator’s action and contributing directly to the sustainable development fund of Six Senses Crans-Montana.

Peaceful cohabitation in mountain pastures

The resort also provides support for OPPAL (“Organisation Pour la Protection des Alpages”). Which supports the training of volunteers who guard flocks of sheep at night, enabling shepherds to rest easy and prevent wolf attacks while using a non-violent approach. The return of these predators is the sign of a flourishing eco-system, but their presence is a major challenge for breeders. In 2024, thanks to the commitment of 477 volunteers and the participation of 90 shepherds, this initiative gave rise to 37 sightings and distancing of wolves, with zero fatal attacks.

Rediscovering forgotten Valais flavors

Did you know that your stay at Six Senses Crans-Montana helps to safeguard the Valais’ fruit heritage? This agricultural region is home to ancestral varieties, once consumed, but now abandoned. To bring them back, the resort works alongside the project’s initiator, Valais horticulturist Nicolas Lorétan. In 2023 and 2024, its support took the form of financing DNA analyses of 93 species of long-forgotten fruit trees. This research led to the discovery of 17 unique varieties, unlisted until then, within a 1-hour radius around the hotel. They include “La Prune Rose de chez Jeremie”, “La Cerise Maison à Louis”, “L’Abricot Kalaabri Widibrunnu” and “La Poire Verger d'Alex”. They have since been multiplied and entrusted to the RetroPomme nursery, to be cultivated again. The next goal is to create a “living museum” of these species within the region, to see that they survive for future generations.

Meaningful figures

• 1,287 kilos of food waste transformed into compost and used to nourish the resort’s gardens.
• 361 liters of used kitchen oil upgraded to create scented candles.
• 752 pupils from nearby schools have visited the Earth Lab as part of educational programs.
• 242 kilos of litter have been cleared from natural sites.
